Its not only important to think about what you need to study, but how and when you need to fit studying in among other activities like sports, clubs, or a job. Keep your academic (and personal) life sane and structured as you move into midterm season to help maximize your scores on these important tests. Here are somepointers for how to stay organized during midterms: 1. Start studying for midterms early Its not in your best interest to crack open your textbook the week of the test. Your midterm exam likely encompasses half of your courses material, and you didnt you learn that material over a few days time it took weeks. Instead, review your notes as you go along in the course, making sure that you understand each concept before moving on to new material. Beginning two or more weeks before midterms, review the material that will appear on the exam. Since youll have already learned the material during your first pass through, this review will reinforce the material and help you to master it as you move toward the midterm. 2. Make a midterm study schedule Mastering half a semesters worth of material can seem daunting, especially if you have multiple midterms. A month before your midterms, sit down and plot out how the next four weeks will go. Cycle through your subjects as you study, making sure that you balance studying for midterms with the coursework expected of you leading up to the exams. For example, you could plan to review chapters one and two of biology and practice simplifying polynomials for your Algebra class on Monday night, review two novels for your English exam and study for your biology quiz on Tuesday, and catch up on math assignments and write an English essay on Wednesday. Balance is key, and plotting out a schedule can help you achieve that balance. 3. Make lists of questions, problems, and topics Keeping lists of questions you have, problems you cant solve, and even topics you already know and dont need to revisit can prevent you from wasting time and allow you to budget more time for difficult topics. Keeping a list of questions and problems you still have can make meeting with a tutor for help before the exam more productive, as youll be able to exclusively focus on problem areas without having to waste time. Keep your lists somewhere close to your study space, and make two lists for each subject: things you know and things you need to study. 4. Get into a study routine Designating time each day for midterm studying can help prevent cramming later on. As you make your study schedule, make sure to incorporate specific time (separate from other homework and academic obligations) in which you will hold yourself accountable for preparing for your midterm. Start with as little as an hour each day a month before the exams, and progressively increase your time spent preparing for midterms as they approach. Making time to study can help keep you focused on midterms without being weighed down by the other responsibilities in your life.

Check out his review of his university: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? James:There is no need for a car if you plan on staying on the campus at Texas Christian University (TCU). In order to get to stores, it may be a good idea to have one (although you will likely have one or two friends who have a car that you could borrow). I have a bike, and I use it to get to Kroger and Walgreens. Those two stores have all of my essentials. There is bus transportation, although I do not find it to be helpful. In short, I would suggest getting a bike; it is cheaper, yet still allows you to be mobile. You can always pitch in for gas money with a friend who takes you to Target once a month. VT:How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? James:I chose Texas Christian University based on the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants being so inviting. I have never had a problem with office hours, and I even go in at other times (and I am able to find the professor). I find the professors to be inviting of questions. They are there to see you succeed, and they will not stop helping you until you do. The faculty at TCU is wonderful. They have welcoming arms open to anyone who comes their way. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? James:The dorms are in tip-top shape, with each only being a few years old. There is one food court on campus, which is annoying. It is in central campus, which makes it easy to get to regardless of where you might be. Being in Texas, it is warm year-round. Going to classes, I always see people I know and others who I have never seen before. People are very nice to one another, much like the professors. It is that southern hospitality each student possesses. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? James:Texas Christian University is known for its business school. It has been ranked highly among other great schools. We are also known for our nursing school. Both of these programs are challenging, and they are accompanied by knowledgeable professors. I am majoring in Mechanical Engineering. This has been my choice ever since I was young. I chose TCU because there are only about 50 students in my engineering classes, making the classroom setting small. The professors get to know you very well due to such a small class size. I have found TCU to be very good at coaching me for the real world once I graduate. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? James:Greek life does play a significant role at Texas Christian University. However, with Frog Camp and Freshman Orientation, TCU does a phenomenal job at helping incoming freshmen find peers (both in their class and upper classes). I did not rush my freshman year, and I was able to find a group of friends that I enjoyed being around. You will find your group early on, and you will probably keep those same friends all four years (but you are not limited to only those friends you meet freshman year). VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? James:I visit the Career Center at least twice a month. They do a great job at letting the students know who is hiring. They host two campus-wide career fairs a year that hundreds of companies attend. Through FrogJobs, students are able to look up jobs both on-campus and off-campus, both for now and for the future. My resume looks golden thanks to the help of Career Services. They take their job seriously, and they make sure to get the name of Texas Christian University out to the big employers. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? James:The library is very crowded. Taking this into consideration, Texas Christian University is expanding the library, which will be ready in the fall of 2015. Although the library is always packed, there are plenty of other study areas (both in dorms and other academic halls) that are unused and are open to studying. No matter your preferred studying environment, you can duplicate that on campus to help lead you to success. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? James:Fort Worth is about 15 minutes by car from campus. Besides the bars, the city shuts down fairly early (around 10:00 p.m. or so). There is not much to do in downtown Fort Worth. Dallas is about an hour by car (or by train). Dallas is a much bigger metropolitan area, thus giving students more options for things to do. If you were to draw a two-mile radius around campus, you have all your necessities: clothes shops, burger joints, pizza places, grocery stores, convenience stores, etc. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? James:I picked Texas Christian University due to its medium size. TCU has about 8,000 undergraduates. I am pleased with the general class size, and I feel like TCU can comfortably hold this volume of students. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. James: I joined a club in December of 2013 called TCU Idea Factory. This is an entrepreneurial club. Through meeting Dr. Eric Simanek, I have learned what it takes to be an entrepreneur in this world. How to Stay Safe on Campus Going off to college comes with a lot of new territory a major part being the new-found freedom. Students are clearly enthralled with this concept and often times dont really know what to do with it. At the very least, they neglect some important elements, such as campus safety. Staying safe on campus is a topic that is endlessly covered, yet not always as well-executed as it should be. Before choosing your college you may want to consider checking out the benefits of an overnight college visitwhich may help you get a better feel of the campus and how you will need to prepare yoursulf. Reasons for this are debatable. However, it appears that many students just dont give much thought to the possible dangers out there since they feel so at ease on campus. While its certainly a good thing to be so comfortable in this second home of yours, the independence of living on your own brings up the need for a lot more responsibility, including thinking about the extra pre-cautions youll have to take from time to time. You definitely dont want to constantly feel paranoid and afraid, but you should just keep your wits about you. Making use of this newly wide realm of freedom is great and perfectly natural as long as you acknowledge everything good and bad that comes with it. Before going away to school you may want to take a look at these 5 things to know about off-campus living. The first step to approaching campus safety is understanding why its so important. You probably grew up you entire life with your parents telling you how to be safe and hopefully youve taken that advice to heart. However, applying those rules to living on a campus by yourself is a different ballpark. It is vital that you recognize you are in a vastly different world and that youll have to think about things you never had to think about before. You may not have a car so there will be a bigger possibility of you having to walk at night. Youre still getting familiar with the town so the chances of getting turned around and lost are higher. You dont have your parents to count on for making sure all the windows are closed and the doors are locked so youll have to remember to double-check on your own. Since you will most likely be overwhelmed and unsure where to begin with these pre-cautions in addition to the other tons of stuff youll be getting used to with college life here are a few bits of advice to get you on a helpful path. Find alternatives to walking alone at night: It will be tempting, it will be easy, but its just best not to walk by yourself after dark. When you get out of that evening class at 9:30pm after a long day of exhausting lectures, its understandable that youll just want to race home and not look back. But in the back of your mind, youll probably know that isnt the smartest thing to do. Especially if you live in an off-campus apartment or house that may not be near the buzzing heart of campus, youre going to want to avoid walking alone. You never know what could happen, so spending a few bucks on a cab or walking with a friend or classmate is definitely worth it. No matter how confident you are that nothing bad could ever happen to you, just realize that the world isnt perfect and play it safe. Pay attention to the schools text/online alerts: Most colleges have caught on to the social media craze by now and are using that to safetys advantage. Typically, schools will have a text alert system you can sign up for where you will receive a text message from the school any time an unsafe situation has arisen on campus. Similarly, this is often offered via Twitter, Facebook, and email as well. At this point, theyre pretty much making it as easy as possible for you to be aware of possible dangers in your area, so why wouldnt you sign up? However, signing up isnt usually the difficult part for students its taking the alerts seriously that tends to be the challenge. It is in our nature to joke and assume such things are being dramatized. In this case, though, give the alerts the attention they deserve. These are the kinds of situations that should not be taken lightly so it is best just to give the school some credit and be careful. Be thankful that you are able to get such a quick heads-up. Check your locks: Particularly for dorm residents, locking the door doesnt seem like such a big deal. With all of the easy socializing going on so close to you and the reassurance of so many R.A.s around, its not surprising that keeping the door locked isnt a top priority. You certainly arent expected to keep it locked all the time and isolate yourself from your floormates, but locking it at night and during less busy times of the day is something you must remember to do. Even if it doesnt seem necessary, it cant hurt. Why not take such an easy step to protect yourself? If you live off-campus, this is even more important. No matter how distracted you get, no matter how tired you are, no matter how safe you feel always lock the door behind you. Additionally, double-check that your windows are closed when you leave and when you go to sleep. College campuses have a comforting feeling about them that lead you to believe friendly students like yourself are the only people around, but tha t is unfortunately not always true. Assume that other, potentially dangerous strangers are out there and avoid keeping your residence too widely open and accessible. Here are a few tips that may help you adjust to dorm lifethat you may want to check out as well. Know where local safety resources are and how to use them: Take some time to research what kind of support the university does offer in emergency situations. Many schools have Emergency poles lit up around campus that include a phone that can be used to immediately call the campus police. It would be extremely helpful to not only know where those are, but how they work also. Being near such a resource but not knowing how to use it would be quite upsetting in the case of an emergency. In addition to specifically emergency-related resources, look into some of the simpler things your campus might offer. For instance, bigger colleges tend to have a bus route and/or night shuttles. Learn their stops and times and save their numbers into your phone so you can call if youre ever in a tough spot and need some quick information. Colleges know that campus safety is important, so they are ready to guide you. Take advantage of your schools resources and keep a smart head on your shoulders. Here are suggestions on how to prepare your child for going back to school this fall: Plan a few fun outings to gear up. Take your child out to lunch and to shop for school supplies and a first day of school outfit or two. Sometimes, picking out a backpack and new school supplies makes things fun, helping children ease into the idea of school. Spend time setting goals for the fall semester. At Huntington, we often talk with students about the importance of goal setting. This process helps children get into the right frame of mind for learning and focused on working hard toward the future. Encourage your child to reflect on last year and think about what to could improve this year. Have him or her write down those goals and a few steps to take to reach them. For high school students, talk about college. Help your teen keep the big picture in mind by having regular conversations about higher education and career plans. What does your teen find interesting from an academic and career standpoint? Discuss visiting their guidance counselor early this fall to ensure your teen is aware of and on the right track with all of the college to-dos. Talk about the importance of staying organized. Organization is the key to doing well in school, and it all starts with developing a good system for keeping track of homework and test and project dates. If you have a younger child, consider a simple homework notebook, while a student planner or smartphone planner app might work best for your middle or high schooler. Remind your child about good time management practices. 5 Tips for Overcoming Procrastination It is often challenging in today's society dealing with the constant distractions that surround us.We are faced with the use of smartphones, tablets, television, computers, and other electronics. It can be difficult to focus your attention on your studies because a majority of your assignments may need the Internet for research purposes. So, how do you avoid these constant distractions when they have been integrated into our lives? As a student-athlete in college, I had to learn to avoid these distractions and discipline myself to meet deadlines for school. I have learned over the years and would like to share 5 helpful tips for overcoming procrastination. 1. Make a To-Do List I constantly make To-Do Lists to this day and quite honestly, they are very helpful. I am a visual learner and I know that if I see it on paper then I will be able to act on it. Use a notepad/sticky note to create a To-Do List and prioritize what needs to be completed before the other. It can be a simple numbered list and will take less than 1 minute to complete! 2. Give Yourself a Deadline/Goals In conjunction to the To-Do List, set some goals for yourself. I found it easier that if you set goals/deadlines for yourself, it will be easier and faster to complete the tasks. You fill more satisfaction knowing you are ahead of schedule or on track to meeting your deadline. 3. Study in a Quiet Area I was taught as a child to always study in a quiet area that is away from any distractions. Dedicate 2 hours to studying without watching television or going on Facebook. Trust me, you will finish a lot faster and will be able to enjoy your favorite television show after your work has been completed. 4. Listen to Classical Music If you can’t work in a quiet area, add some music to the scenario. I would suggest music without lyrics such as classical music. Personally, it makes it more difficult to listen to music with lyrics because then you start singing along. Before you know it you are dancing and singing instead of studying. 5. Start Early Discipline yourself to start studying and reviewing material early. If you do this, you will not have as much material to cram or study for before the test.

(Image: National Hurricane Center graphic/.nhc.noaa.gov) Three stormsâ€"Jose, Maria and Leeâ€"have developed in the Atlantic following the path of Irma but Maria poses the most danger to the storm battered Caribbean islands. CNN reports that, “As of Sunday evening, Maria was about 125 miles (201 kilometers) east-northeast of Barbados, according to the  National Hurricane Center. It had strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane, hurling winds of 80 mph, and is forecast to continue moving toward the eastern Caribbean at 15 mph.”  Stay on hurricane watch right here.   THE EMMYS GET POLITICAL The awards for excellence in television were handed out last night in Los Angeles and the no one was even pretending that it wasnt going to be a forum for political viewpoints. Ashley Hoffman from Time writes, winners from  The Crowns  John Lithgow to  Master of Nones  Lena Waithe embraced the opportunity to make a  statement  on Sunday night. The most common target was, unsurprisingly, the president, who has had a troubled relationship with celebrities and awards shows â€" including the Emmys. Heres the full rundown of political moments from last nights show, in which, BTW, Julia Louis-Dreyfus won her eighth primetime acting Emmy. UVA NAMES NEW PRESIDENT James E. Ryan, a UVA law school graduate and current dean of Harvards Graduate School of Education, was named the schools next president. Ryan will take over from the often-embattled  Teresa Sullivan next fall. C-ville.com reports, that in a speech he acknowledged the hate that has embroiled UVA and Charlottesville, as well as UVA’s own original sin of slavery and both the brilliance of Thomas Jefferson and the brutality. Said Ryan, To me, what this university looked like in 1850, or even 1950, is important to understand, but it is far more important to envision what this university will look like in 2050.
